Postgraduate Information

Part of the postgraduate

Each postgraduate team member is required to enroll in the postgraduate program ‘Tech Innovations in Ventures and Teams’ of the KU Leuven. As a general requirement, you have to have at least a bachelors degree in engineering technology, engineering science, bio-engineering or business engineering.

Students with a degree not obtained at an institution of the Flemish Community may have to meet additional requirements, more information can be found here. Please inform us if this is the case for you.

How many years does the postgraduate take?

The postgraduate program gives you the opportunity to gain unique experience in business or entrepreneurship while working on our innovative team project. The program consists of a minimum of 56 credits, with 44 credits for the team project and a minimum of 12 credits for a personal training program.

The 44 team project credits are split into two parts. These two parts can be followed in the same year, making you a 1 year student. Or can be split over 2 years, making you a 2 years student. If you split the project over two years it is usually combined with a year of your masters degree. Where you essentially do both the masters program and the postgraduate program half time. Our core team consists of a mix of the 1 year students and 2 year students.

What else does the postgraduate entail?

44 of the 56 study points of the postgraduate is Formula Electric Belgium, the other study points contain:

6 ECTS optional courses
You can choose any courses from the KULeuven offer as long as in total you have at least 6 ECTS worth of courses.
6 ECTS workshops
These can be chosen from a offer of workshops that are more practically oriented than your standard courses. The offer of workshops can be found here.

Team Manager

As the Team Manager you play a pivotal role in leading and coördinating all aspects of our team’s operations. You will oversee team members, mangage project timelines, liaise with sponsors and stakeholders and keep track of the budgetting. You organise team meeting, to keep the team updated and working efficiëntly.

Furthermore you have the final responibility for the financial planning of the team, and oversee the logistics and coördination for the different competitions.

Chief Mechanical Engineer

As Chief Mechanical Engineer you carry the final responsibility of the production of the entire car. You keep an eye on the coherence of all components by making the digital assembly of the car and maintaining effective communication between the departments.
To keep the production process running, you divide all manufactured components amongst our broad network of partners. To get the car finished on time, you set up a plan for the different departments that blends nicely, and ensure that everyone respects it.
Finally, you are part of the management team, ensuring that the entire team can function in a streamlined manner. Your central position in the mechanics department also means that you will be one of the main sounding boards for questions and advice for other departments.

Chief Electronics Engineer

As Chief Electronics Engineer you carry the final responsibility of the production of the electrical systems in the car. You keep an eye on the coherence, quality and safety of all electronic systems. You keep an overview of both the electronics and driverless departments and make sure all systems work together.

To keep the production process running, you make a planning, and coördinate this with the production of the mechanical aspects of the car.

Finally, you are part of the management team, ensuring that the entire team can function in a streamlined manner.

Business Relations

Business Relations is responsible for how the outside world perceives the team. You ensure the good reputation of the team to both the general public and the professional world.

You will be responsible for developing and executing marketing strategies to enhance the visibility, brand recognition, and sponsorship opportunities for Formula Electric Belgium. You will coördinate marketing efforts and collaborate closely with other team members to promote our mission, engage with stakeholders, and secure funding for our projects.

Electronics

In the electronics department you are responsible for brain and the nervous system of the car. From safety systems to the high voltage systems. From dashboard and ECU to sensor and actuator nodes. In the electronics department you will be able to develop all these components from scratch. As a hardware engineer, you will design, assemble and test printed circuit boards and embedded systems in our electric race car.

Driverless

The Driverless department is responsible for making our car navigate the track at top speed, flawlessly, and most importantly without a driver. You ensure that our vehicle operates autonomously, pushing the limits of performance while maintaining absolute precision and safety.

You will be responsible for developing and implementing cutting-edge algorithms and control systems to enable fully autonomous driving for Formula Electric Belgium. You will coordinate efforts across hardware and software, working closely with other departments to optimize sensor integration, decision-making, and path-planning, ensuring that the car can compete at its highest driverless level.

Vehicle Dynamics

As a Vehicle Dynamics engineer, you will be responsible for all aspects regarding the handling of the vehicle. This consists of designing the suspension and steering system, determining spring rates, choosing a good set-up, all while ensuring that the design is rule-compliant.

Chassis

The Chassis department is responsible for designing the structural backbone of our race car, ensuring strength, safety, and performance on the track. You play a key role in creating a lightweight yet durable chassis that supports the entire vehicle while withstanding the demands of high-speed racing.

You will be responsible for developing and refining the chassis design, focusing on material selection, structural integrity, and weight optimization. Collaborating closely with other departments, you will ensure that the chassis provides the perfect balance of rigidity and agility, forming the foundation for our car’s success on the track.

Aerodynamics

In the aerodynamics department you will design the whole external shape of the car. This goes from the nose to the diffuser and of course all the airfoils and other aerodynamics devices. Your task will be to optimize these components with the help of simulation software. You will also be responsible of the production method with a goal of optimizing the weight and improving our environmental impact by the use of renewable component like flax fiber.

Powertrain

As a Powertrain Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and manufacturing and cooling of the drivetrain components that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy at the wheels. The Powertrain Department is responsible for the entirety of these components.
